The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Last week I read one of Rachel Joyce’s Desert Island Books choices, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and goodness me it is an unforgettable read. Here’s the synopsis for you;

📖

A father and his young son walk alone through burned America, heading slowly for the coast. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. They have nothing but a pistol to defend themselves against the men who stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food - and each other.

📖

First thing I have to say about this book is that it isn’t for the faint-hearted as there are some truly horrifying parts. There were some parts that I found really tough and upsetting to read but I just couldn’t put it down as I needed to find out what would happen.

📖

It is a really tense read, I found myself holding my breath in places and could feel my anxiety rising throughout. It’s brilliantly written and what I found really interesting is that we don’t find out a lot about what had happened or about the characters themselves but I felt fully invested in their story, which I just found to be devastating.

📖

As Rachel said this not one you can unread, it’s definitely one that will stay with me and the ending is going to haunt me for a long time.

📖

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one, have you read it and what did you think?

📖

Have a great day.
