When I picked up The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald I was expecting a gripping thriller, I was not however expecting to cry like a baby!
The book starts with every parent's worst nightmare. Abi is woken in the middle of the night by a phone call giving her the devastating news that her teenage daughter has been involved in an accident. She is told that Olivia slipped and fell from a bridge, her injuries are catastrophic, she is no dependent upon life support machines.
When Abi arrives at the hospital and sees bruising on her daughter's wrists and then learns that she was pregnant, she starts to doubt that this was in fact an accident. As she begins to look into her daughter's life she starts to uncover lots of secrets.
What an absolutely brilliant premise, I was hooked from the start and was desperately trying to figure out what had happened to Olivia. The story is told from two timelines; present day from Abi's perspective and then Olivia's story. I was absolutely hooked, this really is a brilliant page turner.
I stayed up late last night to finish it, while I had many theories about what may have happened to Olivia, they were all totally wrong! The final part of this book is really well thought out and absolutely heartbreaking, I was actually sobbing through the last pages. What a fantastic debut, I can't wait to see what she'll write next.
