She Said by Jodi Kantor & Megan Twohey
If you’re looking for a thriller to read this Halloween, I would highly recommend She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey. Yes, it’s a non fiction but it reads like a tense, edge of your seat thriller.
In She Said, New York Times Journalists Kantor and Twohey detail how they broke the sexual harassment story that helped ignite the #metoomovement.
In 2017 Kantor and Twohey began their investigation, reaching out to top actresses, former Weinstein employees and several other sources. As they began to uncover large numbers of disturbing stories of sexual harassment and abuse they also discovered unsettling numbers of large payments all covered up with NDAs.
Weinstein was aware of the investigation and wasn't prepare to go down without a fight. When Kantor and Twohey were able to convince some of their sources to go on the record and went live with their story, they couldn’t possibly have known how the floodgates would have opened and sexual harassment and abuse stories from across the world would finally came to light.
This book should be read by men and women alike, what these women achieved is nothing short of amazing. The breaking of this story was so massively important, a real feat of investigative journalism. I’ve read a quote from Kantor and Twohey saying “they were just doing their jobs”. Having read their story now, I think it was so much more than that. They worked with great dedication to this story and their tenacity paid off, what they achieved has such a great importance to women everywhere. I have so much respect for these women, not just the journalists who brought it to light, but those who were brave enough to share their stories.
Even if non-fiction is not your thing, please do pick this one up. It is an absolutely gripping read. I was moved in so many ways, when they describe the first meeting with Weinstein at their offices, his parting shot gave me goosebumps. Later, when the first women agrees to go on the record, I found myself welling up with tears. It’s an absolutely incredible read.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one, will you be reading it?
