Outlawed by Anna North

One of the many things that I love about bookstagram is how it can tempt into reading books that you wouldn’t normally pick up. Outlawed by @annanorthbooks was a #bookstagrammademedoit buy and here’s what I thought of it. (See picture 2 for synopsis).

📖

I was really intrigued by Outlawed, first of all because l haven’t read a Western before and when I saw a review that described it as “The Handmaid’s Tale crossed with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” I just had to read it.

📖

The opening of the book starts with a slightly slower pace as she explains how women who are unable to conceive are believed to be witches and are hanged. The pace picks up a bit as Ada gets married and we start to understand the world she is living in.

📖

Things really get started when Ada joins the Hole in the Wall Gang and they start to plan their biggest heist yet. I was so surprised at how much I enjoyed this one given that I didn’t think Westerns would be my thing. At times it reminded me a bit of Ocean’s 8 with this band of badass women plotting to rob a bank!

📖

For me Outlawed was a really fun escape. I loved the diversity of the characters and the world that Anna created for this feminist Western. It’s a quite a short book and part of me wanted more from some parts, the character development maybe but overall I thought it was a really enjoyable read.

📖

I’ve been looking at The Life and Death of Sophie Stark by Anna North which sounds really good and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work and also trying so more Westerns too.

📖

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you read this one and what did you think?

📖

Have a great day 💕
