Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho

This weekend I finished Last Tang Standing by @hellolaurenho which I thoroughly enjoyed. I heard Beth O’Leary talking about this book a while ago and saying how much she loved it so I had to get my hands on a copy.

I can’t remember who it was recently who was asking about book comparisons (sorry my brain is toast) and whether they influence your book-buying but this is one that I might not have bought based on the comparison. Compared to Crazy Rich Asians (I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I didn’t like it 😬) and Bridget Jones (I love Bridget, who doesn’t, so I was worried I wouldn’t feel the same about Andrea).

Turns out that I loved this one. Yes it is similar to Bridget Jones in that our leading lady Andrea Tang is a young woman looking for love while trying to become partner at the top law firm where she works. Unlike Bridget, Andrea felt more empowered to me, yes she has her moments (don’t we all) but unlike poor old Bridget I always felt like Andrea was going to be ok, she just needed to find the right path. The other thing I loved about the difference between these two ladies is that there isn’t the constant references to her weight that we had with Bridget.

Andrea is a great character, she’s actually a strong lady who’s just trying to find her way. I really enjoyed the glimpses Lauren Ho gives us into the Chinese culture particularly around dating.

Overall it’s a good fun read, it’s very witty in places and it did make laugh a good few times. I love diary style books as I tend to just fly through them which I did with this. Having read a few books this month that have been really thought-provoking Last Tang Standing was like a much needed breath of fresh air.

What are you reading this week?
