In At The Deep End

Well, ahem, that was an interesting read!! Let’s get the obvious out of the way first, no doubt you will have seen reviews describing this book as frank, filthy and funny. It is all of those things and so much more. Civil Servant Julia hasn’t had sex in three years, and even then some of her past experiences haven’t been so great. When a one-night stand accuses her of breaking his penis she decides to swear off sex. Until one night, a lady starts making eyes at her and Julia embarks on the journey to discovering her true sexual identity. So as the other reviewers have said, yes it is frank, it is most certainly filthy, there are lots of graphic sex scenes, (you definitely wouldn’t want anyone reading this over your shoulder on the commute home) and it is also very witty. There are some really funny parts that had me really giggling. It is also a really interesting story with some great characters. Julia is brilliant, she is funny, honest and just so desperately wants to be loved. Her first lesbian relationship takes a somewhat dark turn, which had me feeling genuinely concerned for her. Kate Davies has done a great job of tackling Julia’s controlling relationship and showing how it impacts not only on Julia but her relationships with her family and friends.

If you’re picking this one up expecting a light hearted, and titillating read then you’re in for more than that. It is a fun read in places but it is also a very insightful and interesting read. Just maybe not one you’d want to pass on to your nan when you’ve finished! What did you think of this one?
