Blood Moon by Lucy Cuthew

Last month I read Here is the Beehive and I loved it. I hadn’t read a lot of free verse but I was really keen to try more.

Synopsis:

During Frankie’s first sexual experience with lovely Benjamin, she gets her period. It’s only blood, they agree. No shame.

Then a graphic meme goes viral, turning their fun, intimate afternoon into something mortifying and damaging. And Frankie begins to wonder: is she disgusting?

As the online shaming takes on a horrifying life of its own, her universe implodes. But can laughter, bravery and the fiercest of friends help Frankie find her way out of the darkness?

The suggested reading age for this book is 14 plus and I really hope it makes it into the hands of these kids. Even for me as a parent reading it, I found it really thought provoking.

The writing is beautiful and the flow was perfect. I read this in a few hours and I just thought it was really quite incredible. I found it compelling and powerful and I really felt like I was with Frankie throughout it all.

I am so glad I picked this one up, it is a brilliant read and a wonderful debut. It’s one I will be saving it for both my son and my daughter to read when they get older.

Thank you so much Jenna and Emily for the recommendation, I loved it.

Do you read free verse and do you have a favourite you’d like to recommend?
